A prosthodontist is a dentist that specializes in replacing teeth. If you have suffered from tooth loss, a prosthodontist will likely offer you better results than a general dentist. Prosthodontists undergo more training and special education in tooth replacement therapy, making them more adept at implantology and other tooth replacement techniques.
In addition to replacing teeth, prosthodontists are experts in maintaining the functionality of the mouth, which can include restoration of bone density. There are a myriad of ways that a prosthodontist can help you. Continue reading to learn more.
In their most basic form, prosthodontists offer dentures. There are two types of dentures; partial and full. Dentures are an appliance that can help fix missing teeth. Full dentures are used when all teeth are missing and a partial is used when only a few teeth are missing. Additionally, dentures can be implant supported, creating a more secure fit. Dentures can be a more affordable option to fix missing teeth. A skilled prosthetic doctor will make sure that the dentures fit and look natural.
Bridges are another option that are used for missing teeth. A bridge is a prosthetic toothor teeth attached to the surrounding teeth with crowns. This prosthetic literally creates a bridge, restoring your smile and creating the illusion of a natural tooth or teeth. Bridges are another economic option that will allow you both the aesthetics and functionality of your natural teeth.
Dental implants are by far the most recommended prosthodontic treatment available. An implant is the only option that replaces both the tooth and the root. An implant is a titanium screw that is placed into your jaw.
After the jaw heals, a mold is taken and a crown is made in a lab to fit the specifics of your jaw and bite and then it is attached to the screw. This results in a durable, long lasting tooth that looks and feels real. Implant treatment can take anywhere from three months to a year, depending on a few factors. The reason that implants are so sturdy is that the post and jawbone will fuse together, recreating a “root”.
In order to receive a dental implant, you must have enough bone density to hold the implant. Sometimes after tooth loss, the jaw bone will deteriorate. If there is not enough bone density for an implant, bone grafting may be an option to help prepare the jaw for implant surgery.
Visiting a prosthodontist usually results in a quicker recovery period and longer lasting results. This is because prosthodontists receive much more education and experience in tooth replacement treatments. Therefore, they have a better understanding of how to perform these types of procedures. Due to their training, efficiency and expertise as it pertains to tooth replacement, we recommend choosing a prosthodontic for these types of procedures.
